The University of Michigan is about to cross a threshold most schools only talk about in fundraising brochures. This spring, during its main commencement festivities in Ann Arbor, the university expects to award its one-millionth degree as graduates from the Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses gather for ceremonies on each campus.
Spring commencement plans
Spring Commencement is scheduled for May 2 at Michigan Stadium, with the Big House ceremony anchoring a full slate of school and college events across all three campuses and a livestream for anyone watching from home. According to the university’s official commencement page, the stadium program is set up as the focal point of the day and includes expanded recognition opportunities along with accessibility information for guests and graduates. Full schedules, logistics and viewing links are posted on the University of Michigan Commencement.
U-M leaders on the milestone
Interim President Domenico Grasso has framed the impending one-millionth degree as both a celebration for current graduates and a nod to the university’s long run as a public institution. In remarks reported by The University Record, Grasso said, this year’s ceremonies will be all the more meaningful as we honor the class of 2026 and award our 1 millionth degree.
A millionth degree and who it honors
According to the university, that one-millionth degree will be conferred as it recognizes the Class of 2026, which includes students finishing their studies across Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint this winter term. Coverage of the milestone notes that nearly 14,000 students are expected to graduate across the three campuses and that participating graduates will receive a commemorative tassel featuring the numeral 1 placed in front of the block “M.” MLive reported those details.
The university has also announced its Spring Commencement speakers and honorary degree recipients. Jalen Rose is slated as the main speaker, joined by others who will receive honorary degrees at the ceremony. Speaker and honorary degree information is listed by U-M Detroit.
By the numbers
On the enrollment front, U-M’s Ann Arbor campus recently reported a record fall headcount of about 53,488 students, and the broader university system now includes tens of thousands more at the Dearborn and Flint campuses, bringing total enrollment close to 70,000. Alumni tallies are even larger. The Alumni Association notes that the Wolverine network includes nearly 700,000 living alumni worldwide, a statistic the university leans on when it talks about milestones like this one.
Official enrollment figures are published by the U-M Office of the Provost, and the global alumni totals are highlighted by the Alumni Association.
Why it matters
Hitting a million degrees is, at one level, a symbolic line on a very long scoreboard. Still, it captures how a public flagship can quietly rack up generational impact over nearly two centuries, as cohorts of graduates head into different corners of the world. Other large public universities have been keeping a similar count. Indiana University, for example, publicly celebrated awarding its own millionth degree in 2024, an occasion documented by Indiana University.
For anyone who will not be in Ann Arbor on May 2, the university plans to livestream the Spring Commencement ceremony and post updated viewing information and logistics on its commencement site. Livestream links and ceremony times are available through the University of Michigan Commencement.
