State Grant Gives Early Momentum

The concept already has a modest public boost. The Pennsylvania Agricultural Innovation Grant program lists a $30,000 award to “Food21 of Pennsylvania – SWPA Dairy HUB” for site planning, according to a Pennsylvania release. That grant drops the proposed hub into a lineup of projects focused on turning farm waste into renewable energy and increasing processing capacity across the state. Food21 organizers say the money is intended to help them step beyond the feasibility phase and start deeper outreach to potential tenants and investors.

Farmers, Partners And The Price Tag

Local farmers have been blunt that a nearby processor could be the difference between staying in business and calling it quits. Producer Wayne Frye told reporters he spends roughly $150,000 a year just to haul milk, while operations such as Hopeway Dairy ship milk to Turner Dairy Farm in Penn Hills to satisfy institutional contracts, piling on miles and costs.

Vince Mangini, Food21’s value center manager, has said the group is looking for partnerships that would let farmers develop their own branded or other value-added products, and has also talked about pilot work with outside AgTech partners. County economic development officials say they plan to keep talking with the organization about how Westmoreland County could fit into the effort. The feasibility work puts the anaerobic digester at the center of the hub’s sustainability story.
