A two-alarm house fire ripped through a home near 31st Street and West St. Paul Avenue in Milwaukee on Wednesday night, sending flames through the roof, drawing a major firefighting response and forcing a family to sprint to safety. The people living in the house escaped after one of their sons ran downstairs and alerted everyone, and no injuries were reported.

According to WISN 12 News, crews were called to the scene just after 8:30 p.m., and Battalion Chief Travis Jones said units were dispatched around 8:45 p.m. Flames were visible coming from the roof, and firefighters upgraded the response to a two-alarm because the homes on that block sit so close together. Crews kept the fire from spreading to adjacent houses, and an investigation into the cause is expected to begin soon.

How crews fought the blaze

"We actually used the ladder to get onto the house due to how close the houses are to each other," Battalion Chief Travis Jones told WISN 12 News. Firefighters used the aerial ladder to access the roof, cut a ventilation hole and chase hot spots while protecting exposures on both sides. Neighbors gathered on the street as firefighters ran multiple hose lines and tapped hydrants across the way.

Milwaukee's recent fire history

Milwaukee has seen several high-profile fires in recent months, including a massive five-alarm fire that gutted a U-Haul storage facility in January. The city also suffered a deadly apartment fire in May 2025 that claimed five lives and prompted renewed calls for sprinkler requirements in older buildings, as noted by Urban Milwaukee. Those larger incidents have kept fire safety and building code conversations front and center for city officials.

What’s next

City investigators and fire officials will work to determine what started Wednesday’s blaze, and no cause had been identified immediately. For now, the house’s residents are safe, and no evacuations of nearby homes were reported. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the fire to contact the Milwaukee Fire Department or local police.
