A reported rape inside North Carolina State University's Bragaw Residence Hall has rattled students on the school's west campus after a student told police they were assaulted on April 19. Campus police say they are investigating and that a suspect has been identified but not arrested, while residents in the dorm have been urged to stay on alert. University officials have not released the suspect's name or additional details.
What officials say
In a campus NC State WolfAlert posted April 20, university police said they received a report that a rape occurred at Bragaw Hall on April 19. The alert described the suspect as a 17-year-old white male, about 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, with short brown hair, wearing a white shirt and black athletic shorts. The message added that “the suspect has been positively identified and has not been apprehended,” a line that quickly caught students' attention.
The NC State WolfAlert also noted the message was issued under the federal Clery Act, the law that requires colleges receiving federal funding to share information about certain crimes that may pose an ongoing threat to the campus community.
Police response and campus reaction
NC State Police say they are continuing to investigate the reported assault and have urged anyone with information to contact law enforcement. According to WRAL, the department told reporters that the person identified by investigators is not in custody.
Students living in Bragaw and nearby residence halls say the alert has fueled concern on campus, particularly with a suspect described in detail but not under arrest. Some students have called for more visible patrols and a stronger security presence in the area, while keeping a close eye on locked doors and late-night comings and goings. WRAL has published the university's briefings along with student reaction.
Where students can get help
NC State's Title IX and student conduct pages lay out options for reporting, confidential support and counseling, and a 24-hour rape and sexual violence phone line at 919-618-7273. The university also lists University Police at 919-515-3000 for tips or to report suspicious activity.
Students, staff and visitors can review reporting and support options through NC State Student Conduct, which includes information on campus resources and off-campus services.
Why the alert was sent
NC State said the WolfAlert was distributed under the Jeanne Clery Act, which requires colleges to notify the campus community about certain crimes that may present a threat. The university's Clery compliance page explains when and how timely warnings are issued and how crime statistics are compiled and reported.
NC State Clery compliance also outlines the university's obligations under federal law, including what qualifies for a timely warning versus other kinds of campus safety notices.
Bragaw is a suite-style residence hall on NC State's west campus and houses many first-year students, a detail that has only heightened anxiety for some residents. Anyone with information related to the reported assault is asked to contact University Police at 919-515-3000 or the 24-hour sexual violence line at 919-618-7273.
