If you drive anywhere near downtown Tampa after dark, you have probably noticed the construction zone that never sleeps at the Downtown Tampa Interchange (DTI). Crews are pushing through a busy stretch as steel and bridge deck installations near completion, and the multi-year rebuild is still slated to wrap up in early 2027. In the meantime, motorists should brace for regular nighttime lane and occasional ramp closures, plus a continuous northbound lane closure on 15th Street that is expected to remain in place through roughly May.

Project status and schedule
According to FDOT Tampa Bay, the DTI is a $227.5 million design-build effort that began in fall 2023 and remains on track for an early 2027 completion, with The Lane Construction Corporation serving as the prime contractor. FDOT's March 2026 update lists the current work activity percentages: steel girders for the new southbound I-275 to eastbound I-4 ramp are 98 percent installed, major drainage installation is about 65 percent complete, 90 percent of utilities have been relocated, and bridge decks for the new ramp over Palm Avenue are roughly 90 percent finished. The agency also reports that 75 percent of the concrete pavement for the new northbound I-275 exit ramp to Ybor City is in place and that installation of ITS fiber, lighting and signalization along 14th and 15th Streets is ongoing.
What the rebuild will deliver
When the dust finally settles, the reworked interchange is expected to add capacity and make local access a bit less of a guessing game. Plans call for a new two-lane ramp from southbound I-275 to eastbound I-4, a relocated eastbound exit into Ybor City at 14th and 15th Streets, and widened frontage roads aimed at easing bottlenecks. Those design elements and planned community features such as walking trails and small public spaces are detailed on Tampa Bay Next, while The Lane Construction Corporation is managing construction and staging. Both sources highlight safety upgrades and improved merge geometry that are intended to cut down on the daily backups that have become a fact of life around the interchange.
Closures and commuting impacts
Most lane work is scheduled for overnight, typically between 9 p.m. and 6:30 a.m., and the agency warns that some interstate ramps may be closed between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. to accommodate heavy lifts and traffic shifts. Drivers traveling through the Ybor City and downtown corridors should also account for a continuous northbound lane closure on 15th Street between Palm Avenue and 12th Avenue, which is expected to stay in place through about May. FDOT posts weekly lane-closure summaries and a real-time map for the DTI and encourages motorists to plan alternate routes; see FDOT for current lane-closure details.
How to stay informed
FDOT offers an email subscription for project updates, and subscribers receive a confirmation from [email protected]. The agency has shared the March work summary on its project page and social channels and lists Maricelle Venegas as the project contact and Kris Carson as the media contact. Local drivers are advised to allow extra travel time on weeknights and to check real-time traffic apps before heading downtown, especially if their route takes them anywhere near the Downtown Tampa Interchange.
