A 39-year-old scooter rider died Saturday afternoon after colliding with a Honda Civic at the busy intersection of North Capitol Street and K Street NE, according to police. Emergency crews rushed the man to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
What happened
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, as reported by WJLA, the crash occurred around 3:44 p.m. A 2017 Honda Civic traveling southbound in the 1000 block of North Capitol Street entered the intersection on a green signal and stopped while waiting to make a left turn.
As the light changed, a 2025 Zhilong ST scooter heading northbound in the 900 block entered the intersection against a solid red that had been red for about three seconds and struck the passenger side of the Civic, police said. The rider, identified as 39-year-old Aaron Watson, was transported to the hospital, where he later died.
Micromobility safety and local context
Permitted shared-device trips in the District have surged, with combined ridership topping 12 million trips in 2025, a trend advocates say highlights how safety upgrades are lagging behind usage. The Washington Area Bicyclist Association has urged DDOT to speed up work on protected-lane projects and tighten enforcement of rules for dockless devices as part of the city's Vision Zero goals.
Investigation
Police say the crash remains under investigation and that officers at the scene provided the preliminary account of signal timing and vehicle movements. As reported by WJLA, no charges have been announced, and investigators are still working to confirm the exact sequence of events.
The collision adds to a steady stream of incidents that have fueled calls for safer street design across D.C., with advocates and some council members pointing to protected lanes and clearer signal timing as key tools to prevent similar tragedies, the Washington Area Bicyclist Association argues.
