An early-morning patrol on San Antonio's North Side turned into a gunpoint standoff Friday after a car slammed into a marked police cruiser in a hotel parking lot, authorities said.
The collision unfolded around 4 a.m. at Jones Maltsberger Road and Northern Boulevard, near Loop 410, while a San Antonio police officer was sweeping hotel lots in response to a recent string of car burglaries, according to police.
What happened
As reported by KSAT, a police lieutenant at the scene said the officer spotted a vehicle that matched the description from an earlier incident and switched on the patrol car's emergency lights.
Police said that as the officer stepped out of the cruiser, the suspect vehicle threw it in reverse and hit the marked unit. The officer then drew a firearm and held the two occupants at gunpoint until backup officers arrived, according to the lieutenant. Both people in the vehicle were detained at the scene.

Crashes involving patrol units are not unheard of in San Antonio and can quickly turn routine calls into chaotic scenes.
