An arrest attempt on a busy stretch of Reisterstown Road turned into a hospital run last night after a Baltimore police officer was struck by a civilian vehicle while officers were trying to detain a man in Northwest Baltimore. The confrontation, in the 5700 block of Reisterstown Road, drew a heavy police presence. The officer was taken to a local hospital, and authorities have not yet released his condition.
According to WMAR2 News, the incident began around 8:19 p.m. when officers approached a 42-year-old man who was wanted for an armed robbery. After a brief foot chase, officers moved in to make the arrest. While that arrest was underway, a male officer was hit by a civilian vehicle that was not involved in the original incident. WMAR reports that the officer was transported to a local hospital, and the civilian vehicle remained at the scene.
Where It Happened
The 5700 block of Reisterstown Road sits along a busy northwest corridor that has seen stepped-up patrols and several high-profile police responses in recent months. Hoodline coverage of nearby Park Heights has highlighted recent chases and weapon recoveries that triggered extra police activity in the area, a backdrop that helps explain the strong patrol footprint along this stretch of Reisterstown Road.
Officers Struck by Vehicles: A Recurring Risk
Incidents in which officers are injured by vehicles are not rare in Baltimore, and several such cases have been logged this year. As WBAL reported in December, separate collisions earlier in the year sent officers to the hospital and underscored the hazards first responders face during pursuits and roadside investigations.
Investigation
Investigators remained on scene Wednesday night collecting evidence after the officer was struck, and WMAR notes that the civilian driver stayed at the location while officers worked. The department has not released the officer's name or any update on his condition, and it is not yet clear whether the driver or the arrested man will face criminal charges related to the collision.
Baltimore police have not provided additional information. Anyone with details about what happened is asked to contact the department. This report will be updated as authorities release more information.
