Cloudy skies and a mild start across the Orlando area have temperatures sitting near 70°F this morning, while northeast winds are already on the move. By this afternoon, the area should top out near 79°F, with gusts strong enough to turn loose patio furniture and umbrellas into projectiles. Tonight will be mostly clear and comfortable, with lows around 61°F.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
Northeast winds of about 15 mph this morning are expected to ramp up to roughly 15-20 mph this afternoon, with frequent gusts to 25-30 mph, especially along the coast and through the I-4 corridor. The National Weather Service in Melbourne notes that the gusty conditions could push around high-profile vehicles and send unsecured outdoor items flying during the afternoon commute.
Fire Weather Watch Tuesday
A Fire Weather Watch is posted for Tuesday afternoon (April 21) for interior Volusia, Lake, Orange, Seminole, Osceola, and Okeechobee counties, in effect from about noon through 6 p.m. local time. According to the National Weather Service, low humidity in the upper 20s to mid-30s, combined with gusty northeast winds, could allow any fires that start to spread quickly, so outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.
Beaches And Boating
Boaters should plan on a rougher ride, with Small Craft Advisories and building seas in place. Along the central Florida Atlantic beaches, a strong longshore current will support a Moderate to High rip current risk today. Lifeguards may hoist red flags, and officials are urging beachgoers to stay in lifeguarded areas. Nonessential marine trips are not recommended.
What To Do
Bring in or secure loose patio furniture, umbrellas, and tarps before the strongest gusts arrive. Hold off on any yard or debris burning through Tuesday afternoon, and give large vehicles extra space on highways during the windiest periods. If you spot smoke or an uncontrolled fire, call 911 right away and keep your distance so crews can work safely.
Looking Ahead
Winds should gradually ease by mid to late week as a weak high-pressure area builds in, with afternoon highs nudging into the low 80s by Thursday and only a slight chance of showers through much of the workweek. Keep tabs on local forecasts, as the National Weather Service will update advisories if conditions change.
