A reported shooting at Triangle Town Center on Friday afternoon sent shoppers running for the exits and triggered a massive police and medical response at the north Raleigh mall. Witnesses described officers sweeping parts of the building while others were guided outside as authorities moved to lock down the scene. Officials say the situation remains active and investigators are still working to secure the area.
Police were alerted around 3:30 p.m., according to WRAL, which reported that there was no immediate word on how many people may have been injured or any description of a possible suspect. The outlet labeled the situation as developing and said officials plan to release more details as they are confirmed.
Heavy emergency response
Video and eyewitness accounts showed a substantial law-enforcement presence at the mall, with officers and forensic teams working in and around the property. As highlighted in coverage of earlier chaos at the mall, aerial footage from a separate response at Triangle Town Center earlier in April showed officers spread across the parking lot and multiple evidence markers. That scene has only added fuel to growing anxiety among shoppers about safety at the complex. Officials have not said whether the two incidents are connected.
Earlier chase and crash
Earlier this month, police said shots fired at the mall sparked a chase along Capital Boulevard that ended when a vehicle crashed into a utility pole in Wake Forest. Two people were taken into custody in that case, ABC11 reported. That episode put security at the mall under a brighter spotlight while investigations continued.
Mall background
Triangle Town Center is a large regional shopping destination at 5959 Triangle Town Blvd in north Raleigh, with more than 100 stores and services, per Visit Raleigh. The property has seen violence before, including a 2022 parking-lot shooting cited in local reporting, and that history has kept concerns about safety front and center for nearby residents and tenants, coverage of a past parking-lot shooting noted.
What managers and police say
The company that manages Triangle Town Center says it is cooperating with investigators. After the earlier April incident, a Summit representative told WRAL, "We are working with our partners in law enforcement and assisting in the investigation. Our security staff is working diligently to ensure the safety of our patrons, customers and tenants."
Friday's situation is still unfolding, and investigators say they will release additional information as it becomes available. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact police.
