A quiet Pleasant Prairie block turned into a tragedy scene early Thursday when a house fire ripped through a home and left two residents dead. Fire crews rushed in during the overnight hours, and a regional fire task force is now combing through the damage to figure out what started the blaze.
What Happened
Firefighters were called to a home on 116th Street near 25th Avenue around 2:40 a.m., according to FOX6 Milwaukee. Crews found two residents inside the house and got them to a nearby hospital, where both were later pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.
According to information provided to the station by a Pleasant Prairie detective, a regional Fire Task Force has taken over the scene to manage the investigation and methodically work through the debris.
Safety Takeaways
The fire is a stark reminder of how quickly a home can become deadly and how crucial early warning can be. The National Fire Protection Association says working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a reported home fire by about half. The group recommends alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas.
Residents are urged to test alarms once a month, swap out batteries as recommended, and make sure everyone in the home knows at least two ways out of every room in case a fire blocks the most obvious route.
Investigation Under Way
Pleasant Prairie officials, along with the regional Fire Task Force, are examining the home to determine where and how the fire started, FOX6 Milwaukee reports. Authorities have not released the victims’ names or any additional identifying details.
Figuring out the origin of a fatal house fire can take days, as investigators work through the wreckage, interview witnesses and run forensic tests on items pulled from the scene.
Authorities said they will release more information as it becomes available.
