A routine Monday shift at a FedEx shipping center near Charlotte Douglas International Airport turned terrifying just after sunrise when a worker was badly hurt in an industrial accident and rushed away with life‑threatening injuries.
The incident happened around 6 a.m. in the 4200 block of Yorkmont Road, a stretch packed with warehouses and loading bays that sit just off the runways. An ambulance pulled up to the building, then left with lights flashing as the injured worker was taken to a nearby trauma center.
Mecklenburg EMS Agency (MEDIC) confirmed that one person was transported with life‑threatening injuries to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, according to Queen City News. Crews were dispatched before 6:15 a.m., and investigators were working to figure out exactly how the accident happened.
Local TV station WBTV also reported the April 20 incident and published images showing an ambulance backed into a bay at the FedEx ship center. WBTV said FedEx had not yet responded to requests for comment and noted that other carriers, including Amazon and UPS, operate facilities in the same Yorkmont corridor near the airport.
Where It Happened
The Yorkmont Road corridor is a busy logistics zone right up against Charlotte Douglas, with trucks and jets sharing the same skyline. FedEx lists a ship center at 4200 Yorkmont Rd on its site. That listing shows the location handles air freight and other shipping services and posts openings for material handlers and vehicle technicians, jobs that involve heavy equipment and steady vehicle traffic in loading areas. What Comes Next
When serious injuries occur at workplaces in North Carolina, the Department of Labor and sometimes federal OSHA can be notified and may open investigations. The state maintains an online portal for reporting workplace accidents, and The North Carolina Department of Labor provides guidance and a reporting page for such incidents.
Queen City News reported that its journalist reached out to the department for comment, and WBTV noted that FedEx had not returned its requests for information at the time. This story will be updated if officials release more details.
