Early Tuesday morning a fiery single-vehicle wreck on the inbound exit ramp from U.S. 290 to Fairbanks North Houston Road left one person dead and turned the northwest-side commute into a headache for drivers. Emergency crews shut down the inbound lanes at the Senate Avenue exit ramp while firefighters knocked down the flames and tow trucks worked to clear the charred vehicle.
According to KHOU, the crash happened around 3:30 a.m. on the inbound exit ramp. Responders arrived to find the vehicle fully engulfed in flames, prompting the immediate closure. Houston police told the station that one person died at the scene, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Traffic impact and alternate routes
The timing could not have been worse for commuters. Drivers on the northwest side reported heavy inbound delays as closures forced traffic onto frontage roads and surrounding neighborhoods. Houston TranStar and local officials urged motorists to detour via Beltway 8 or nearby surface streets, including Pinemont Drive and West Tidwell Road, with Antoine Drive and Wirt Road helping drivers move north-south around the jam.
Investigation underway
Houston police's Vehicular Crimes Division is leading the investigation and has not released details about what might have caused the crash, including whether speed, impairment, or mechanical failure is suspected. The agency advised drivers to steer clear of the area while investigators and tow crews worked the scene, according to KHOU. The same stretch of U.S. 290 has seen multiple serious crashes and lengthy closures in recent years, as documented by the Houston Chronicle.
How commuters can plan
Morning commuters should plan for significant inbound delays and consider routing around the closure using Beltway 8 or local surface streets. For up-to-the-minute lane status and estimates on when all lanes will reopen, check Houston TranStar along with updates from local news outlets.
