Early Tuesday turned grim along a stretch of I-45 near Spring Cypress, where a pedestrian was killed after being struck by multiple vehicles in the southbound lanes, prompting authorities to shut down traffic around Cypress Oaks Drive.
Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff's Office were called out around 3 a.m. for reports of a person in the middle of the highway. When they arrived, they found the victim on the roadway. Officials have not released the person's identity and say no suspects have been identified.
Investigators were told the individual was likely hit by more than one vehicle and that the area is often frequented by people experiencing homelessness, according to Click2Houston. The Harris County Sheriff's Office closed the affected stretch of I-45 while first responders worked the scene and collected evidence. For now, deputies are keeping details close as the investigation remains active.
Pedestrian risk on high-speed roads
Traffic deaths like this are part of a troubling national pattern. U.S. drivers struck and killed 7,148 people walking in 2024, with many of those deaths occurring after dark, in hit-and-runs or in areas without sidewalks, according to the GHSA. Closer to home, Houston has faced its own spike in roadway fatalities, with TxDOT data showing traffic deaths hit record levels last year, as reported by Houston Public Media.
What comes next
Under state law, law enforcement agencies must submit crash reports to the Texas Department of Transportation, feeding into a statewide crash database used to analyze trends and safety needs, according to TxDOT. Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff's Office will file the official crash report as the case moves forward, and more information is expected to be released when it is available. Authorities have not announced any arrests or citations connected to the collision.
