Gracie Elizabeth Faye Landa, 19, is out of jail and back in the community, wearing an ankle monitor while she awaits trial in a deadly ambush-style shooting near Whippoorwill Park that left 23-year-old Christopher Piedrasanta‑Perez dead. Landa, who is pregnant and due later this month, was released on a secured $50,000 bond on April 10, 2026, and will be supervised by a Durham nonprofit in the meantime.
According to The News & Observer, Superior Court Judge Michael O’Foghludha approved a joint motion setting Landa’s bail at $50,000 secured, which she posted on April 10. Her attorney, Olivia Warren, told the court that medical providers had raised concerns about Landa’s diet and that the Durham County jail was not equipped to handle a third‑trimester pregnancy. Court records show that under the release conditions, she must wear an electronic monitor and receive support from a local nonprofit as the case moves forward.
Scene and victims
The shooting unfolded just after midnight on May 30, 2025, in what police say turned into a deadly setup near the entrance to Whippoorwill Park. Officers responding to the 1600 block of Rowemont Drive found a man and two women shot inside a vehicle, according to ABC11. The man, later identified as Christopher Piedrasanta‑Perez, died at a hospital. The two women survived but were treated for serious injuries.
How investigators say the ambush unfolded
An arrest warrant and investigative reports, outlined by Court TV via Scripps, describe what detectives believe happened before the bullets flew. Investigators say two or three people emerged from nearby woods and opened fire, sending multiple rounds into the vehicle as the victims arrived so one woman could fight another. More than 40 shell casings were recovered at the scene, and an autopsy lists a gunshot wound to the head as the cause of Piedrasanta‑Perez’s death.
At a recent hearing, Piedrasanta‑Perez’s parents spoke about the toll their son’s killing has taken on their family, The News & Observer reported. Prosecutors have also charged 24‑year‑old Edy Steven Flores Reyes in the case. Reyes remained in the Durham County jail without bail as of the hearing, and no trial date has been set for either defendant.
Legal outlook
Landa and Reyes both face murder charges, and the case is now grinding through the early stages of the court system. Before any trial is scheduled, the parties will work through pretrial motions, discovery and scheduling. In the short term, lawyers on both sides are expected to focus heavily on medical and custody conditions in their filings, while investigators continue building the broader case behind the Whippoorwill Park ambush.
