
A 17-year-old was shot just off the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh campus on Saturday evening, turning an already rowdy night into a crime scene. The teen was taken to a local hospital with injuries police described as non-life-threatening. A few hours later, officers arrested a 23-year-old man from Omro after a high-risk traffic stop. The investigation is still active and criminal charges are pending.
Gunfire Near Campus
Shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday, police started getting multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots near McKinley Avenue and John Street. Officers who were already in the area keeping tabs on an unsanctioned pub crawl reported hearing the shots themselves, according to information released by the Oshkosh Police Department and reported by FOX6 News Milwaukee.
Search Locks Down Neighborhood
First responders found a 17-year-old Oshkosh resident with non-life-threatening wounds and took him by ambulance to a nearby hospital. The response quickly grew, pulling in officers from the Oshkosh Police Department along with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, UW-Oshkosh Police and the Wisconsin State Patrol. Drones and multiple K-9 units were deployed as part of an extensive search of the area, according to WBAY.
High-Risk Stop Nets Suspect
Police say a suspect was spotted trying to leave the area just before 8 p.m. Officers then carried out a high-risk traffic stop at Jackson Street and Irving Avenue, where a man was taken into custody without incident. The suspect was later identified as a 23-year-old man from Omro, with criminal charges still pending, according to reporting from the Oshkosh Northwestern.
