Charlotte rolled into Thursday with clear skies and mid 60s temps, but the easygoing start is not going to last. Strong sun and a dry air mass are expected to crank afternoon temperatures to near 90°F, and strengthening southwest winds could send gusts into the mid 20s. It will be one of the hottest and driest afternoons of the season so far, and officials say that combination means even small fires could get out of hand fast.
Afternoon Heat And Gusty Winds
Forecasters expect highs to top out near 90°F this afternoon, with the hottest stretch between about 2 and 5 p.m. Southwest winds should run about 6 to 14 mph, with gusts that may reach 24 mph. The stiffest gusts are likely in more exposed spots and along the I 77 and I 85 corridors, where strong mixing during peak heating will help bring those higher wind speeds down to the ground.
Similar hot, breezy conditions are in the cards for Friday and Saturday, and a cold front arriving Sunday should help knock temperatures back a bit next week, according to the National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg.
Fire Risk And Restrictions
With humidity expected to drop into the 20 to 30 percent range and vegetation still dry, the National Weather Service has issued a Fire Danger Statement for much of western North Carolina and northeast Georgia this afternoon. Lower humidity plus stronger winds is a classic recipe for fast-spreading flames, and officials are urging residents to take the risk seriously.
North Carolina’s statewide ban on open burning is still in effect, which means backyard burn piles and other open fires remain illegal until further notice. Enforcement is ongoing, according to the N.C. Department of Agriculture, and recent small brush fires have already demanded rapid responses from local fire crews.
Plan Ahead
Officials are asking residents to skip any open burning, run gas grills only in safe, well cleared areas and keep a close eye on them, and hold off on yard work that might throw sparks during the windiest afternoon hours. It is also a good idea to secure lightweight patio furniture before the gusts pick up.
If you have outdoor plans, you may want to target morning or evening when conditions are less intense, and leave extra time for travel since gusty winds can make handling trailers and bicycles a bit tricky. Cooler weather is expected to settle in late Sunday into Monday, with a chance for a few showers on Sunday and overnight lows dipping into the mid 40s early next week.
