A Wake County father is facing a murder charge in the death of his infant daughter after what authorities describe as a lengthy, methodical investigation. The Wake County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrested the man Tuesday, months after his baby was brought to a local hospital with injuries on Oct. 28, 2024, and died four days later. Detectives worked the case for more than a year and, earlier this month, secured a murder charge following a review with prosecutors. The suspect is being held at the Wake County Detention Center.
Sheriff Praises Investigators
Wake County Sheriff Willie Rowe publicly thanked his investigators and offered condolences to the child’s relatives, according to WRAL. "On behalf of the entire agency, we extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the victim's family and all impacted," Rowe said in a statement. The Sheriff’s Office noted that detectives stayed on the case for more than a year before bringing the murder charge this month.
Timeline And Charge
Deputies say the baby was first admitted to a local hospital on Oct. 28, 2024, with injuries that have not been publicly detailed, and that she died four days later. After what officials described as a lengthy probe and consultation with the Wake County District Attorney’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office obtained a murder charge against 25-year-old Christopher Gonzales earlier this month. Gonzales was arrested Tuesday, according to The News & Observer. Authorities have not released information on exactly how the child was hurt.
What’s Next
Gonzales remains jailed at the Wake County Detention Center, and the Sheriff’s Office says the investigation is still active, per WRAL. Prosecutors in Wake County will determine how the case proceeds and set any future court dates. The Sheriff’s Office has said it will share additional details as investigators develop them.
