After months of dust, detours and construction noise, the Roseville Public Library is set to welcome patrons back on Wednesday, April 1, unveiling a $3.5 million renovation that turns the longtime book hub into more of an all-purpose community hangout. The overhaul trades tired fixtures for flexible gathering spots, a cafe and dedicated zones for kids and teens, all designed to feel a little more like Roseville and a little less like a strictly “shhh only” space.

What’s new inside

The remodel brings a top-to-bottom refresh, including new paint, murals, carpet and light fixtures. Behind the cosmetic changes is a reworked floor plan that now includes larger meeting rooms, a separate conference room and added quiet study areas for students and remote workers.

The new cafe shares space with an interactive children’s area called The Village, while a Creation Station makerspace offers tools like a 3D printer for hands-on projects. Patrons can also browse a growing Library of Things, where items such as an air pump or a record player are available to check out, as reported by WXYZ.

“Our library had not been renovated in 30 years and it was very pink and purple,” Library Director Jacalynn Harvey told WXYZ. Harvey said staff pushed for a redesign that better reflects Roseville’s character and gives families, students and neighbors more options for programs, study time and meetings, not just quick in-and-out book runs.

How the project was paid for

The $3.5 million renovation was funded in part by a $20 million bond that voters approved in 2023, along with $1 million from the library’s reserve fund, according to C&G Newspapers. City leaders have said the bond money was meant to improve several municipal facilities throughout Roseville, not just the library, with the library project being one of the marquee upgrades.

When to visit and what to expect

According to the library’s website, doors will officially reopen today. Curbside pickup and phone reference services paused from March 28 to 31 while staff handled last-minute setup and moved materials into the revamped space.

For updated hours, program details and a calendar of reopening events, the library is directing visitors to its site, Roseville Public Library.

Why it matters

Local reporting shows the Roseville Public Library logged more than 42,000 visits and loaned over 114,000 items last year, numbers that help explain why voters backed both a millage renewal and the recent bond, according to C&G Newspapers. Officials say the reconfigured layout and new programming are meant to keep pace with shifting demands, from quiet study zones to hands-on maker activities, so the library can function as a broader community hub where residents gather, work and learn together.
