San Antonio Water System crews spent Monday scrambling to clamp down on a 24-inch water main break along Frost Bank Center Drive that shut down lanes near the arena. The utility said it is still unsure how long the repairs will take but reported that no customers, including the Frost Bank Center itself, have lost water service. It is the second significant main problem in that immediate area in as many months.
Repair work and immediate impacts
Crews converged on Frost Bank Center Drive between Gembler Road and East Houston Street after the break was reported just after 11:30 a.m., according to KSAT. A SAWS spokesperson told the station the failed line is a 24-inch main and that, so far, no customers have experienced an interruption in service.
Recent pattern: second break in weeks
If that stretch of road is starting to feel jinxed, there is a reason. The latest failure follows a March 27 break in almost the same spot, when a 74-year-old cast-iron main dropped beneath the roadway and crews needed about 24 to 48 hours to complete repairs, the Express-News reported. That earlier break shut down lanes but did not force any cancellations of events at the arena, officials said at the time.
Why these breaks keep happening
Water system watchers will recognize the usual suspects: aging cast-iron pipe, soil that has been stressed by drought, and long-deferred maintenance that is now coming due. Axios has reported that roughly 35% of San Antonio's water mains are at least 40 years old, and that utility leaders are pushing a multiyear funding plan aimed at replacing old lines and upgrading the system.
What drivers and eventgoers should know
Drivers headed to or past Frost Bank Center should expect lane closures and detours around Frost Bank Center Drive while crews continue repair work. Residents can monitor any service impacts on SAWS's outage map or call the utility's emergency line for the latest updates.
