A Monday evening near Durham’s American Tobacco Trail turned deadly when officers found a 44-year-old man critically injured in the 3000 block of Fayetteville Street. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died, and police have now opened a homicide investigation.
On Tuesday, Durham police identified the victim as 44-year-old Howard Reade and said a preliminary investigation indicates he was stabbed, according to The News & Observer. As of Tuesday afternoon, authorities had not released any suspect description.
Officers were called to the scene around 6:30 p.m. and remained there into the night, WRAL reported. Investigators said evidence markers stretched from a nearby store to the trail, and they asked anyone who saw or heard anything to contact Investigator J. Barnes or CrimeStoppers.
Second deadly attack near the trail
The killing is the second fatal attack along nearly the same stretch of the American Tobacco Trail in recent weeks, according to The News & Observer. Police later charged LaRue Barbee in the March 9 death of 51-year-old Chesleigh Lyons, a case first detailed in a manhunt on the trail. One neighbor told the paper they often turn back before reaching Fayetteville Street because the area "attracts criminal activity and drug use."
Investigation and tips
Durham police say the investigation is ongoing and, as of Tuesday, they had not named a suspect. Initial reporting on the incident appeared on CBS17. Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator J. Barnes at 919-560-4440 ext. 29537 or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200.
