A quiet stretch of Shook Road north of Claremont turned into a disaster zone today when a house exploded, critically injuring a married couple while their 14-year-old daughter managed to escape, authorities said. The home was left heavily damaged and still burning as crews worked the scene, and officials have not yet said what caused the blast.

According to WCNC, two adults were rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after the explosion. Firefighters and investigators remained on site as the charred structure continued to burn and smolder, with officials staying tight-lipped about what might have triggered the incident.

State And Federal Teams Join Local Fire Investigators

The response pulled in some serious investigative muscle. The Catawba County Fire Marshal called in help from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, according to WCNC.

The North Carolina SBI handles arson and fire investigations across the state and operates a Bomb Squad along with explosive-detection K-9 teams, per the North Carolina SBI. The ATF explosives division, for its part, provides technical support and forensic work to local agencies in cases that involve explosions or possible explosive devices, according to ATF.

Victims And Scene

WCNC reports that the couple’s 14-year-old daughter escaped the burning home, while the two adults were transported to hospitals with critical, life-threatening injuries. Local officials have not released the names of the victims, and they say the investigation is still very much active as teams comb through the wreckage.

According to Catawba County, the Fire Marshal’s Office coordinates origin-and-cause investigations and mutual aid among local departments, which helps explain the large, multi-agency presence on Shook Road. Authorities have not released any additional findings as on-scene work continues.
