Las Vegas woke up to clear skies and mild temperatures Sunday morning, but the real headliner is the wind. A Wind Advisory is in effect through 11 p.m. Sunday, with strong southwest gusts expected to make driving and boating tough and to send unsecured items skittering across parts of the valley and nearby ranges.

Afternoon Gusts and Where They’ll Be Strongest

Southwest winds are set to ramp up through midmorning and peak in the afternoon, with sustained speeds around 15 to 25 mph and valley gusts near 35 mph. Exposed passes and the Spring Mountains could see gusts pushing 50 mph, according to the National Weather Service Las Vegas. Drivers can expect sudden crosswinds on I-15 and other open highways, and high-profile vehicles will feel it the most. The gusts may also kick up patchy blowing dust and churn up choppy water on Lake Mead and other area lakes.

Timing and Temperatures

High temperatures should land in the mid-70s, around 74°F, Sunday with overnight lows dropping into the low 50s. Winds are expected to back off Monday as the system shifts, and then temperatures climb back into the 70s and low 80s by midweek. Isolated showers or a rumble of thunder are possible along and north of I-15 this afternoon, and any storm cells that do pop could briefly crank up the gusts even more.

What Locals Should Do

Locals are urged to secure patio furniture, signage and loose trash, give extra space when passing big rigs, and hold off on nonessential boat trips until the winds ease.
