Emergency crews flooded the shoreline near Warnimont Park in Cudahy on Friday morning in a large multi-agency response, with the Milwaukee Fire Department later stepping up to provide an on-scene update. Dozens of engines, rescue rigs and specialty units lined South Lake Drive as teams worked near the bluff, turning the quiet lakeshore into a very visible operation. Details were still scarce early Friday while crews continued their work at the scene.
Officials' update
According to FOX6 News Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Fire Department briefed reporters at the site of the response near Warnimont Park on Friday morning. FOX6 shared video of the department’s statement from along the bluff and reported that multiple agencies were involved in the callout. The station also noted that specific information about what prompted the response remained limited while crews were actively operating.
Where it happened
Warnimont Park sits on the Lake Michigan bluffs along South Lake Drive, and the county lists the park’s address as 5400 S. Lake Drive, according to Milwaukee County Parks. The bluff and shoreline in this area can be tough to reach and have required rope and other technical rescues in earlier incidents, which can add complications to emergency work along the lakeshore, as WISN reported.
Park's recent history
Warnimont has also figured into wider law-enforcement work in recent years. Investigators recovered human remains along the bluff in April 2024 during a homicide investigation, and the spot later became the site of a community memorial. Coverage of that case and the memorial emphasized how delicate and complex operations on the bluff can be, and why multi-agency responses sometimes come into play, per FOX6 News Milwaukee.
As of late Friday morning, officials had not released a full accounting of the latest incident. This story will be updated as city and county agencies share additional information.
