What started as a routine vehicle stop in South Sacramento on Thursday ended with deputies hauling a parolee to jail after, according to detectives, he walked up to the scene and a loaded handgun turned up hidden inside a car.
Deputies with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Gang Suppression Unit arrested Darryl Maxwell after they said they found a loaded, unregistered Glock 19 tucked under the vehicle’s center-console trim. Detectives said Maxwell was on both parole and probation. He was taken to the Sacramento County Main Jail and booked on a felony firearms charge.
How Deputies Say The Stop Went
In an update posted on X, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said Gang Suppression Unit detectives were doing proactive enforcement in the South Sacramento area when they conducted a vehicle stop. While they were on that stop, Maxwell walked up and, as the post put it, “felt the need to interject.”
After a records check and a search of the vehicle associated with him, detectives said they found a loaded, unregistered Glock 19 concealed under the center-console trim. They arrested Maxwell on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to the post from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.

Why Units Like GSU Focus On Vehicle Stops
The Gang Suppression Unit has recently highlighted a series of South Sacramento arrests tied to what it calls proactive stops and searches, which have turned up illegal weapons. The Sheriff’s Office has said the goal is to take guns associated with violent offenders out of neighborhoods.
One recent GSU stop that turned into a weapons and narcotics seizure was detailed in a Sheriff’s Office release and later republished by CrimeVoice. That kind of activity is regularly featured in the department’s public posts as part of its enforcement strategy.
Booking And Tips
The Sheriff’s social media post listed 916-874-5115 as the non-emergency line for tips and questions. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said Maxwell was transported to the Sacramento County Main Jail and remains in custody pending charges.
Members of the public with information were urged to contact the Sheriff’s Office. All charges are allegations, and Maxwell is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court.
