What started as a late-night drop-off on San Antonio's South Side turned violent in seconds early Sunday, leaving a man in critical condition and a car full of bullet holes. The shooting unfolded around 1:53 a.m. in the 3100 block of Southcross Boulevard, where witnesses told police they were dropping the victim off when shots erupted. Both the man and the vehicle were hit, and a dark-colored Dodge Charger was seen speeding away. The victim is hospitalized in critical condition.
Police response and what we know
According to WOAI, officers were first called to a local hospital after staff reported a gunshot victim. Once there, investigators learned the shooting had actually taken place back on Southcross Boulevard. Witnesses said gunfire broke out just as the victim stepped out of the vehicle, with bullets striking both him and the car. One witness told police a dark-colored Dodge Charger took off from the scene. So far, detectives have not released any suspect description, and the case remains very much open.
South Side violence in recent weeks
The South Side has seen more than its share of violence this spring. Reporting by MySA detailed a triple shooting outside a Walgreens on March 29 that left one person dead and two others in critical condition. In a separate case, KSAT reported a fatal drive-by shooting in early April that killed a woman. Like Sunday’s attack on Southcross, those shootings are still under investigation and have neighbors on edge about ongoing safety concerns.
What investigators are asking
WOAI reports that detectives have not made any arrests and continue to search for leads. Officers are asking anyone who was near the 3100 block of Southcross Boulevard in the early morning hours, or who may have surveillance or cellphone video from the area, to contact the San Antonio Police Department.
