Adams Morgan’s Spanish streak might be on its way back. Paperwork is in for El Meson Espanol to take over the compact storefront at 1826 Columbia Road NW, with plans for 83 seats and a total occupancy of 85. The proposed hours stretch well past midnight on weekends, hinting at a future where tapas and late-night crowds again share this busy corner with a long-running restaurant legacy.
According to What Now DC, El Meson Espanol has a liquor-license application under review with the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration. The filing lists proposed hours of Sunday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 a.m. The application tracks with occupancy figures already posted on site, signaling that the concept is moving from rumor territory into real planning.
What the placard shows
Local site PoPville shared a photo of the liquor-license placard, which describes the project as a “New Retailer’s Class ‘D’ Restaurant” with a seating capacity of 83 and a total occupancy load of 85. PoPville first spotted the Meson Espanol concept in May 2025 and circled back this spring when the placard and additional filings appeared, a clear sign that something more than neighborhood gossip is in play.
A corner with a Spanish past
The space at 1826 Columbia Road has been home to Spanish and Latin-focused spots for decades. The Washington Post once listed El Rincon Espanol at that very address in its neighborhood guides, tying the block to Adams Morgan’s long-standing role as a dining destination. A new Spanish-forward menu in the same space would be a small but very visible callback to that history, especially as tenants on the strip continue to turn over.
What’s next
There is still no public opening date. What Now DC reports that its reporter reached out to the ownership for more information and that the liquor application remains under review. If the ABCA signs off on the license and the usual inspections follow, the placard suggests El Meson Espanol would operate with the kind of late-night schedule that fits right into Adams Morgan’s nightlife rhythm.
For now, fans of Spanish food and neighborhood watchers will want to keep an eye on that Columbia Road block. The filings and placard are promising, but the real test is still ahead in the form of regulatory approvals, permits, and, eventually, opening-day doors swinging wide. We will update readers as more details and a formal opening timeline emerge.
