A Sunday traffic stop on FM 2090 in Splendora turned serious when a police officer pulled over a driver who had drifted into oncoming traffic with a child in the car. The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated with a child under 15, according to the Splendora Police Department.
In a statement on its Facebook page, the City of Splendora Police Department said an officer began a roadside investigation after seeing the vehicle fail to stay in a single marked lane and enter oncoming traffic at the FM 2090 and Lucas Drive intersection. The post says the officer observed clear signs of intoxication and took the driver into custody for DWI with a child under 15 in the vehicle.
FM 2090 and Lucas Drive
FM 2090 is Splendora's primary east–west roadway, and Lucas Drive connects to it near the city's small commercial strip, according to the City of Splendora. The intersection has appeared before in local police logs and traffic reports.
Police Response and Child Safety
The department has been putting a noticeable focus on child safety in its recent enforcement actions. In a Grappler gadget chase recap, officers used a Grappler device in February to bring a high‑speed pursuit to a controlled stop while children were inside the fleeing vehicle.
Legal Consequences
Under Texas law, driving while intoxicated with a child passenger younger than 15 is a separate offense classified as a state‑jail felony. The statute and penalties are detailed in Texas Penal Code §49.045, which allows for state‑jail confinement and fines and can trigger involvement by child‑protective authorities depending on the situation.
The Facebook post by the department did not name the driver or release other identifying details. For non‑emergencies or tips, the public contact information is listed on the Splendora Police Department website.
