Santa Monica’s Main Street just lost two familiar flavors. Holey Grail Donuts and Samosa House have quietly closed their doors, leaving regulars without taro doughnuts or grab-and-go samosas on a stretch that usually hums with foot traffic.
In the former Holey Grail space, a sign in the window signals what is likely coming next: Canada-based dessert chain La Diperie. The posted notice names the soft-serve specialist as the incoming tenant, although there is no word yet on when the new spot might actually open. The closures add to the ongoing churn along one of the city’s busiest shopping and dining corridors, where every empty storefront gets noticed.
According to the Santa Monica Mirror, the Holey Grail signage identifies La Diperie as the next occupant of the space. The outlet also reports that Samosa House’s Main Street branch has shut down with no replacement tenant announced, and notes it is not yet clear whether that closure will be temporary or permanent.
Holey Grail's Main Street Run
Holey Grail landed on Main Street with a bit of buzz, bringing made-to-order taro-based doughnuts and a sustainability-focused menu to the neighborhood when it opened its brick-and-mortar shop in late 2022. Eater LA covered the debut at the time, noting the Main Street address as part of the Hawaii-born brand’s first push into the Los Angeles market.
La Diperie Aims To Expand
La Diperie, founded in Montreal, has built its name on dipped soft-serve and customizable desserts, with a menu that leans heavily into toppings, sauces, and all things dippable. The company’s own site, La Diperie, highlights its franchising focus and wide range of sweets, while coverage of the brand’s growth has pointed to just how quickly it has spread since its original Plateau location. Eater Montreal has detailed the rapid Canadian expansion in recent years.
Samosa House Closure And Inspection Note
Samosa House describes its Main Street restaurant as part of a long-running, family-operated business that has served customers in the Los Angeles area since 1979. Public health records cited by Westside Today show that the Santa Monica location was ordered closed on March 12 for unsafe food-temperature violations. As of now, no reopening date has been listed.
Main Street's Churn
Main Street continues to shuffle its deck of tenants as the area finds its footing after the pandemic. New concepts keep arriving while some longtime favorites struggle to hang on, creating a constant sense of musical chairs along the strip. The Santa Monica Daily Press has reported that post-pandemic business activity has brought fresh energy and new arrivals, even as established retailers and restaurants face ongoing pressure.
For now, the former Holey Grail space sits in limbo. There is no posted timeline for renovations or a grand opening, and the Santa Monica Mirror notes that the incoming tenant has not announced an official schedule. Regulars on Main Street will have to wait and see when the dipped-cone era begins, and whether Samosa House makes a return or becomes another permanent entry in the neighborhood’s list of gone-but-missed spots.
