Michigan State Police troopers arrested three teenagers after a brief but violent chase through west Detroit yesterday, stopping a car that investigators say is tied to a recent homicide, a run of carjackings, and multiple shootings. Troopers recovered firearms from the vehicle, and one trooper was treated at a nearby hospital and later released.
Troopers first spotted the suspect vehicle near 8 Mile Road and Burt Street and tried to pull it over. Instead, the driver took off, leading police east toward Hessel Avenue and Sunderland Road, according to The Detroit News. The outlet reports that Michigan State Police ultimately took three teens into custody, two 18-year-olds and a 17-year-old, after using tactics to stop the fleeing car.
How troopers say the chase unfolded
In a statement from the Michigan State Police, officials said troopers tried a precision immobilization, or PIT, maneuver near Sunderland in an effort to spin out the suspect vehicle. The attempt damaged two MSP patrol cars. A short time later, the fleeing vehicle collided head-on with an MSP cruiser near Hessel. Troopers then detained three male occupants and recovered two firearms from inside the car. Names of the suspects and potential charges were not immediately released as detectives continued their work.
Allegations and what comes next
Per The Detroit News, MSP investigators believe the three suspects are connected to a homicide reported within the previous three days and linked to five carjackings and three separate shootings. The trooper injured in the crash was treated and released from a nearby hospital, and multiple patrol cars were left with damage from the PIT maneuver and the head-on hit. Prosecutors are expected to review the case file before announcing formal charges.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and that more details will be released when available. Anyone with information related to the case is urged to contact the state police or Detroit homicide detectives.
