Sacramento woke up to a gray, soggy start this morning, with light rain falling across the city, temperatures around 54°F at Sacramento International, and low clouds hanging over the valley. Showers and spotty thunderstorms are expected to keep firing through the day, with the most widespread action lining up with the afternoon commute. Drivers should plan for periods of moderate to heavy rain and some localized ponding on streets.
What To Expect Today Through Wednesday
Periods of showers and thunderstorms are expected Tuesday, April 21, with new valley totals of roughly a half to three-quarters of an inch possible and additional rain into Wednesday. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Sierra from 2 AM Tuesday, April 21, through 5 PM Wednesday, April 22, with 12–18 inches likely above 5,000 feet and locally higher amounts on the highest peaks, according to NWS Sacramento.
Thunderstorm Hazards And Commute Tips
These thunderstorms could briefly turn things gnarly, with heavy downpours, lightning, small hail, and gusty winds that can make driving a bit of an adventure. Expect slower commutes and possible transit delays. Steer clear of flooded streets, give yourself extra travel time, and if you are heading to the Sierra, be ready for snow-related travel restrictions and slow going.
