A routine school run in Toledo turned into a police investigation on April 20 when a 71-year-old Trinity Transportation driver pulled over a bus full of students after saying she felt sick. Hospital staff later told officers the driver was intoxicated, according to police records. The driver was taken to a local hospital, and while the name is redacted in reports, initial public records show no criminal charges so far.
WTVG reports that officers were dispatched just before 7:30 a.m. to the intersection of Douglas and Pelham after a 911 caller reported a bus driving recklessly. The station says the bus had students on board when the driver pulled over and that medical staff later informed Toledo police the driver was intoxicated.
WOIO/Cleveland 19 reviewed police documents that show investigators tried to contact Trinity Transportation to alert the company about the incident but initially could not reach anyone. Those same records confirm the driver’s name has been blacked out and that the investigation is still active.
WKRC Local 12 notes that the public records available to date do not list any criminal counts tied to the incident. Local outlets report that investigators are still combing through medical and police records before deciding whether to recommend charges.
Legal Implications
Depending on what investigators ultimately conclude, the driver could face operating-while-intoxicated charges under Ohio law. WHIO reports that charges remain on the table as the probe continues. Typically, prosecutors review police narratives, test results, medical charts and witness statements before making a call on whether to file criminal counts.
How This Fits Into The Bigger Picture
The case is already fueling fresh questions about how Ohio screens and supervises school bus drivers, even as state data say buses are still among the safest ways for kids to get to class. Ohio's School Bus Accident Report points to low injury rates and recommends stronger training and better sharing of safety data.
Concerns about driver behavior were already on the radar in Toledo. In a separate incident earlier in April, local coverage detailed another driver accused of ignoring barricades and driving through a sinkhole area with students on board. WTVG reported that the bus in that case was driven through barricades around a sinkhole, prompting its own investigation into safety protocols.
What Officials Are Saying
For now, Toledo police are keeping public comments tight. The department has confirmed only that an investigation is underway and has declined to release the driver’s identity, citing public records that list the name as redacted. According to WKRC, investigators attempted to reach Trinity Transportation to notify the company after the incident but did not initially receive a response.
