A 24-year-old man is recovering in stable condition after he was shot late Saturday night near the University of Pennsylvania in what witnesses described as an unprovoked attack, according to police. He was struck in the lower back and taken to a hospital for treatment. University of Pennsylvania police later stopped a man whom witnesses identified as the shooter. That suspect was taken into custody and also transported to a hospital.
According to 6abc, Philadelphia officers were called just after 10:15 p.m. to 40th and Chestnut streets for a report of a person with a gun and arrived to find the 24-year-old already wounded in the lower back. The victim and two other people told officers they had seen a man shouting to himself before he walked up to the group and opened fire without warning. A firearm was recovered at the scene. A 43-year-old man identified by a witness was detained by University of Pennsylvania Police, and investigators say the motive is still unknown as detectives continue to work the case.
Deadly Store Shooting Earlier This Month
The weekend gunfire follows a separate fatal shooting in University City earlier in April. As reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer, a 26-year-old man was shot and killed inside a convenience store at 40th and Market on April 6, a killing that renewed calls for increased patrols around the nearby campus.
