CoCo's Cafe, a longtime boba and Taiwanese comfort-food staple on the Drag, is getting ready to say goodbye. The Guadalupe Street spot announced Monday that it will close after more than 25 years, with its final day at the campus-area outpost set for May 10, 2026. In true UT fashion, longtime customers and students are already trading stories and nostalgia as the shop plans its send-off.
The family-owned cafe first opened in 2001 and bills itself as Austin's "First Boba drink shop," according to CoCo's Cafe. For years, the small counter turned out milk teas and Taiwanese comfort dishes that became go-to orders for hungry students and nearby residents.
Founder Joyce Yang said in a statement to the Austin American-Statesman that May 10, 2026, will mark the last day on Guadalupe. She explained that "the drag has become increasingly challenging for delivery access and parking, making it harder for us to adapt." Yang added that fewer students are going out casually and that more of the campus crowd now leans on delivery instead of lingering in dining rooms.
Another Campus Classic Feels The Squeeze
The closure fits into a broader shake-up along Guadalupe, where longtime fixtures have struggled with shifting student habits and rising costs. Axios chronicled the trend when it reported Wheatsville's plans to close its Guadalupe store, highlighting how the Drag has been steadily reshaped in recent years. CoCo's now joins the list of spots that defined the strip for generations of UT students, but are finding it harder to make the math work.
Goodbye Deals, Shared Memories, And A New Home Base
Before the doors close on Guadalupe, CoCo's is inviting fans to send in their favorite memories of the campus location via Dropbox and is planning a buy-one-get-half-off drink special on April 24–25, according to AOL. For anyone not ready to part ways with their regular order, the cafe notes on its site that customers will still be able to find the full menu at CoCo's on Research Boulevard after May 10.
