A sweeping drug operation across four southeast Michigan counties ended Friday with what investigators say is a sizable haul: nearly 700 grams of heroin and fentanyl and about $274,000 in seized assets. The coordinated sweep targeted residences in Washtenaw, Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties and brought out specialized units and K-9 teams. Alongside the drugs, authorities reported finding cash, high-end jewelry and firearms, and they say the investigation is still very much alive.
Why It Matters In Washtenaw
Fentanyl continues to sit at the center of the region's opioid crisis, turning what might look like routine drug dealing into a public health emergency. According to the Washtenaw County Health Department, fentanyl or its analogs were involved in about 93% of opioid-related overdose deaths in 2024. Many of those deaths involved a mix of opioids and stimulants. In that context, police say, large seizures of heroin and fentanyl can have an outsized impact on overdose risk in surrounding communities.
What Police Say They Took Off The Streets
Investigators reported recovering approximately 699.5 grams of heroin and fentanyl, 47 grams of crack cocaine, 14.5 grams of cocaine, seven Xanax bars and four firearms. They also seized $73,968 in cash along with an estimated $200,000 in high-end jewelry, for a total of about $274,000 in confiscated assets, according to reporting by MLive. K-9 units assisted in evidence searches at several locations, helping officers track down drugs and other items tucked out of sight.
How The Multi-County Sweep Came Together
The operation was led by the Livingston and Washtenaw Counties Narcotics Enforcement Team and pulled in a long list of county, regional and federal partners, including local SWAT units. Multijurisdictional narcotics task forces combine state, county, local and federal officers to target trafficking that jumps across county lines, according to the Michigan State Police. Agencies identified as participants included Monroe-area narcotics teams, the MSP Emergency Support Team, Downriver SWAT, the ATF, the DEA and the Sterling Heights Police Department.
Investigation And What Comes Next
Officials say the case is far from wrapped. The investigation remains active, and investigators plan to seek charges once the probe is complete, as reported by MLive. So far, authorities have not publicly released any suspect names or laid out specific charging decisions, citing evidence that is still being processed. With federal partners involved, some parts of the case could end up coordinated with federal prosecutors, depending on what charges ultimately land.
What Residents Should Keep In Mind
Local health officials continue to warn that illicit opioids are frequently laced with fentanyl, and they urge residents to treat any illicit opioid as potentially fentanyl-contaminated. They also encourage connecting people who use drugs with harm-reduction resources rather than waiting for a crisis. The Washtenaw County Health Department offers information on overdose prevention, naloxone access and local treatment services for residents looking for help.
Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact local law enforcement or the narcotics task force leading the probe.
