Wendy's has quietly pulled the plug on three Triangle restaurants, scrubbing two Raleigh spots and one in Cary from its website and leaving at least one building boarded up. The surprise exits have taken familiar drive-thru lanes out of rotation and dropped yet another vacancy into shopping centers that were already juggling tenant turnover. The closures line up with a larger corporate plan to slim the chain's U.S. footprint this year.
Which Triangle locations closed
As reported by the News & Observer, Wendy's removed its listings for three Triangle restaurants: the Raleigh locations at 8209 Creedmoor Road and 4105 Wake Forest Road, both marked as removed on Dec. 15, 2025, and the Cary restaurant at 1213 N.W. Maynard Road, taken down on Jan. 14, 2026. The reporter also noted that the Wake Forest Road site had its windows boarded and barricades in place to stop drivers from pulling into the property.
Why Wendy's is pruning stores
The retrenchment is part of Wendy's "Project Fresh" turnaround effort that follows a sharp sales slide. In the company's earnings release via PR Newswire, U.S. same-restaurant sales were reported down about 11.3% in the fourth quarter. Axios reported that executives told investors they aim to close roughly 5% to 6% of U.S. restaurants in the first half of 2026 so they can pour more resources into stronger locations.
Local fallout and what to expect
The closures trim Wendy's footprint in the Triangle. The News & Observer counted about 10 Raleigh restaurants and three in Cary after the changes, a smaller web of options for anyone craving burgers and Frostys on short notice. Industry coverage notes that the company typically reviews underperforming restaurants one by one and may choose to re-franchise, transfer ownership, remodel or close locations depending on performance, which can ripple out to workers and to landlords trying to fill space. Restaurant Dive has detailed how the chain is guiding franchisees through this reset.
Wendy's has said it is executing Project Fresh with urgency and will keep reassessing its U.S. portfolio as it rolls out value deals and new menu items. We will be watching local property records and company disclosures for any word on reopenings, sales or new operators stepping into the closed Triangle sites.
