A late-night drive on State Road 24 turned deadly Saturday when a wrong-way crash in Gainesville killed a 30-year-old Jacksonville man and left three others with minor injuries, according to troopers.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators say the man was driving a sedan east in the westbound lanes of SR 24 near NE 53rd Terrace around 11:45 p.m. when he slammed head-on into a westbound pickup truck. The impact flipped the pickup and the sedan erupted in flames. Emergency crews pronounced the sedan’s driver dead at the scene, while the pickup’s occupants escaped with minor injuries.

The pickup’s driver, a 21-year-old man from Middleburg, along with two passengers, a 21-year-old Middleburg man and a 19-year-old woman from Macclenny, were all hurt but are expected to recover, according to News4JAX.

Troopers Probing What Went Wrong

Florida Highway Patrol troopers are still working to piece together what led up to the wrong-way wreck. The agency stresses that its early findings are preliminary and subject to change as more evidence is collected.

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, official crash reports can take up to 10 days to be finalized and made available. Full records are accessible through the state’s Crash Portal once completed. This story will be updated as troopers release additional details.

Wrong-Way Crashes Pack A Deadly Punch

Traffic safety researchers have long warned that wrong-way, head-on collisions are among the most violent crashes on the road. A recent analysis in the Journal of Safety Research found that wrong-way fatal crashes remain a stubborn national problem, often tied to roadway lighting, road design and driver impairment.

Local troopers urged drivers to take extra care on SR 24 at night while the investigation continues. The Florida Highway Patrol has not yet released the name of the Jacksonville driver, pending notification of his family, and had no further public updates as of Sunday morning.

Troopers are asking anyone who may have seen the sedan before the collision or has additional information to contact the Florida Highway Patrol, according to News4JAX.
