A Milwaukee police pursuit that began on the city's northwest side Tuesday morning ended nearly eight miles away in Brookfield, where officers arrested a 32-year-old man. Parts of the chase were captured on video and scanner audio, including a stretch of wrong-way driving on I-41 and a multi-jurisdiction response involving Brookfield police and Waukesha County deputies. Neighbors described officers boxing in the vehicle and hearing what sounded like flash-bangs as emergency alerts warned nearby residents to take shelter.
Video shows wrong-way driving on I-41
A Wisconsin Department of Transportation traffic camera recorded a silver Nissan Rogue driving the wrong way onto I-41 at Lannon Road, and scanner audio on the clip warned, "They're in the wrong lane of traffic. Going east bound in the west bound lanes." Local coverage aired that footage and audio, according to TMJ4.
Multi-jurisdiction pursuit ends after stop sticks
Police said officers attempted a traffic stop near 60th and Townsend before the driver took off, and the pursuit crossed city and county lines as Brookfield police and Waukesha County sheriff's deputies joined in. The chase lasted roughly 30 minutes and ended when stop sticks were deployed near Calhoun and Sunnycrest, where the driver was taken into custody. Officers reported finding illegal drugs in the vehicle, and Milwaukee police will refer potential charges to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office, per FOX6.
Neighbors recall frantic moments and alerts
Witnesses at a Sendik's in Brookfield said the car "flew past" them, and residents reported receiving an emergency alert telling people to take shelter while streets around Goetz and Sunny Crest were blocked. One neighbor said family members locked doors as officers with weapons took positions on the street, and others described hearing loud popping sounds that seemed like flash-bang devices. Those accounts were included in local reporting, according to TMJ4.
What happens next
Milwaukee police said they will refer charges against the 32-year-old to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office, which will decide whether to file formal charges. Officials have not released the suspect's name or a full list of allegations as investigators continue to review the pursuit, per FOX6.
