A Sterling Heights motorcyclist is dead after a violent three-vehicle crash on 18 Mile Road that sent him flying from his bike and into the path of another SUV, police said.

The collision happened yesterday afternoon on eastbound 18 Mile Road just east of Mound Road, when a black Dodge Durango pulled out of a private drive on the south side of the road and struck a yellow Suzuki motorcycle ridden by a 35-year-old Sterling Heights man, according to ClickOnDetroit. Authorities described it as a three-vehicle crash that launched the rider into the air.

The impact threw the rider off the motorcycle and shoved the bike into the westbound lanes, where it collided with a silver Dodge Nitro. He was rushed to a Metro Detroit hospital but later died from his injuries, according to FOX 2 Detroit.

Investigation and what police are asking

Sterling Heights police say the crash remains under active investigation as they work to sort out the sequence of events and determine fault. Officials said alcohol did not appear to be a factor as of yesterday evening and urged anyone who witnessed the wreck or has video or other information to contact the department, according to ClickOnDetroit.

Why this stretch matters

The Mound Road and 18 Mile corridor has already been on safety watchers' radar as a high-risk zone for serious crashes. Hoodline previously highlighted nearby junctions as among the region's most hazardous intersections, and local planners point to long-term fixes like the Innovate Mound effort, which aims to rebuild the corridor and improve safety.

Anyone with information on Monday's crash is asked to contact the Sterling Heights Police Department. FOX 2 Detroit reported that investigators are still piecing together the chain of events and that no charges have been announced at this time.
