
A quiet early-morning stretch of Merrill Road turned deadly Saturday when a man in his early 20s was killed after his car was rear-ended and sent spinning into a concrete pole, according to local authorities. Emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene.
The crash happened around 3 a.m. in the 7700 block of Merrill Road near Wedgefield Boulevard, when another vehicle struck the victim's car from behind and pushed it off the roadway, according to Action News Jax. Police said the driver of the car that hit him, a man in his late 30s driving a Toyota Camry, was not injured.
Per First Coast News, Sgt. Robert Hungerford of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office identified the victim as a man in his early 20s and said paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. The sheriff's office also told First Coast News that this wreck is the 68th traffic fatality in Duval County so far this year.

JSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit is leading the investigation, working to piece together the sequence of events by processing the scene and gathering witness statements. Authorities have asked anyone with information about the crash to contact the sheriff’s office or submit anonymous tips through local CrimeStoppers, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
