Aberdeen police say a routine afternoon call at a Hospitality Way motel turned into a serious sex assault investigation that ended with two men in handcuffs and a handgun seized as evidence.
Officers were already at the property in the 900 block of Hospitality Way around 2:18 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, when they spotted a minor outside and realized the young person might be the victim of a violent crime. Investigators say that the encounter set off a fast-moving probe that led to two arrests after a traffic stop elsewhere in Aberdeen. The investigation is still active.
Police identified the suspects as Jeofredo Andason Santos Bernal, 24, of Parkville, and Miguel de Jesus Pineda Lopez, 27, of Baltimore. Both are facing charges that include rape and use of a firearm, according to officials. Detectives obtained a search warrant and recovered a handgun they believe is tied to what happened at the motel, details that were reported by CBS Baltimore.
What the charges mean under Maryland law
Under Maryland law, rape is a felony that can carry extremely steep prison time, especially when prosecutors allege aggravating factors such as the use of a weapon or a very young victim. Sentences can stretch to decades or even a lifetime, depending on the degree of the charge and the specific facts a court finds.
The legal definitions and maximum penalties for first and second degree rape are spelled out in state statute. The full text is available in Maryland Code §3‑303 and §3‑304.
What police are saying so far
Detectives have released a few specifics about how the alleged assault started inside the motel. They have not disclosed the minor victim's age or gender, citing the ongoing investigation and privacy concerns.
According to the department, Bernal and Pineda Lopez were identified during follow up work by investigators, then stopped and arrested during a traffic stop in Aberdeen. Police say both men are facing firearms-related allegations that could bring sentence enhancements if Harford County prosecutors decide to pursue them.
The arrests and basic outline of the case were included in an Aberdeen police statement cited by CBS Baltimore.
How to help
Detectives are still working to piece together what happened at the motel and are asking for the public's help.
Anyone with information is urged to call Aberdeen detectives at 410‑272‑2121, follow the prompts and use extension 162. That main line is listed in recent media releases and on the department's site, and tips can be routed through the nonemergency number, according to the Aberdeen Police Department.
Both suspects are presumed innocent unless and until they are found guilty in court. Police say more information could be released as detectives and prosecutors continue to review the case.
