A Friday evening stop outside a vape shop on Akron's South Arlington Street turned violent when a 16-year-old boy was shot in the head while sitting in a parked car, according to police. The shooting, in the 1000 block of South Arlington Street, left the teen with what authorities described as non-life-threatening injuries. Two other juvenile males were also in the vehicle, and they were not reported to have critical injuries.
Shooting and response
Akron police say suspects walked up to the vehicle and opened fire around 7:30 p.m. Friday in the 1000 block of South Arlington Street, striking the 16-year-old in the head. After the gunfire, the juveniles attempted to drive away but crashed into a fence. A passerby then stepped in and drove the wounded teen to Summa Health Akron for treatment, according to Cleveland 19.
Local context
The incident lands in the middle of an already tense conversation about youth-involved gun violence in Akron. In recent months, the city has seen several nonfatal shootings involving teenagers and continued scrutiny of police tactics following a deadly officer-involved shooting last year, according to News 5 Cleveland. That backdrop has intensified community calls for transparency and thorough investigations whenever juveniles are shot.

Akron police say the suspects have not been identified and are asking anyone who knows something to come forward. Tipsters can call the department at 330-375-2490 or the APD tip line at 330-375-2TIP. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Summit County CrimeStoppers at 330-434-COPS or by texting TIPSCO to 274637, according to Cleveland 19.
