What started as a flashy car meetup in Houston's Aldine area early Monday ended with sirens, a chase, and one driver in handcuffs, according to Houston police. Officers were called out to a large, rowdy gathering of vehicles that escalated enough for them to attempt a traffic stop. That stop turned into a pursuit, and by the time the dust settled, the driver was in custody and several firearms had been recovered as detectives worked the scene and collected evidence.
What police said
Houston police told KHOU the Aldine meetup morphed into a pursuit after officers moved in on the crowd. During the response, officers recovered firearms and took the driver into custody. According to KHOU, Houston police said investigators are still working the case and processing the evidence pulled from the scene.
A pattern of takeovers
Unpermitted car meetups and so-called "takeovers" have been a growing headache for law enforcement across the Houston area, often clogging streets and sometimes ending with high-speed chases and arrests. Earlier this month, a north Houston parking-lot takeover involving an estimated 100 to 150 vehicles turned into a several-mile pursuit and an arrest, as reported by the Houston Chronicle. Local TV crews have repeatedly aired similar scenes of smoke, screeching tires, and sudden police lights, including coverage from ABC13, highlighting the strain these sprawling meetups put on traffic and public safety.
Investigation underway
Police told KHOU that the Aldine investigation is still active and that they were not releasing additional details at the time of the report. Detectives are cataloguing what they collected at the scene and working to identify who helped organize the meetup and whether others might have been involved. Authorities are asking anyone with video or information about the gathering or the chase to contact Houston police.
What happens next
In a recent, similar case, deputies seized a vehicle used in a takeover and said it could be targeted for asset forfeiture, a tactic some agencies have leaned on to discourage would-be organizers, reporting by the Houston Chronicle showed. For now, investigators in Aldine are still working to piece together who put the meetup together and whether more arrests or charges could be on the way.
