A man and a child were left in critical condition Monday after an Amtrak passenger train struck their car at a railroad crossing on Lockwood Drive in northeast Harris County, just outside Summer Creek High School. The impact mangled the vehicle and drew a multi-agency response from deputies and fire crews. Passengers aboard the train were reported unhurt as emergency personnel worked the scene.
What officials say
Harris County constables said the collision happened at the railroad crossing on Lockwood between West Lake Houston Parkway and the East Sam Houston Parkway, and that both victims were in critical condition. Investigators told reporters the Amtrak train was traveling about 60 miles per hour when it struck the back, driver-side of the car, sending the vehicle an estimated 100 feet down the tracks. The train was carrying more than 100 people, and none of those aboard were injured.
Officials did not immediately release the victims’ names or additional medical details, according to CW39 Houston.
A dangerous stretch of Lockwood
Lockwood Drive has been the scene of several serious collisions in recent months, prompting residents and advocates to push harder for safety upgrades at crossings near schools and neighborhoods. Hoodline previously covered a deadly wreck on the same corridor in a story titled Fifth Ward horror crash, and city planners have advanced discussions about grade separations and pedestrian bridges aimed at reducing risk.
This latest crash again puts pressure on those plans and on any interim protections, as residents question whether safety fixes are arriving fast enough for people who cross or drive near the rails.
Response at the scene
The Sheldon Fire Department said the train conductor got off the train and tried to help after the crash but had to pull back after encountering alligators near the tracks. Crews then moved in to assist the injured and clear the crossing for investigators, turning an already chaotic scene into something that looked uncomfortably close to a wildlife documentary.
Deputies and fire crews remained on scene for hours as tow teams removed wreckage and workers secured the rail line. The constable’s office said the investigation is ongoing and urged anyone with information or dash-cam footage to contact law enforcement, according to CW39 Houston.
Investigation and safety steps
Authorities did not immediately say what put the car on the tracks or whether warning devices at the crossing were functioning. Those questions are part of the active investigation.
The crash again highlights the hazards at at-grade railroad crossings on busy corridors near schools and parks, where drivers, pedestrians and trains all intersect. Officials said they will release updates as investigators piece together what happened.
