According to NBC Los Angeles, deputies said the shooting occurred at approximately 3:23 p.m. on the 5500 block of N. Orangecrest Avenue and that the suspect was transported to a local hospital. The outlet reported that investigators had not immediately disclosed what prompted the use of force and that the case remained under active investigation.
How the Department Will Review the Case
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department outlines its review process for deputy-involved shootings on its website. Homicide detectives first conduct a criminal investigation, which is followed by a preliminary administrative review by the Critical Incident Review Panel.
The incident is then examined by the Sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee and the department’s Constitutional Policing Advisors as part of the internal review process.
District Attorney Review and Legal Analysis
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division typically conducts a separate legal analysis in deputy-involved shootings to determine whether criminal charges are warranted, according to the DA’s officer-involved shooting reports page.
That review can take time, as prosecutors examine body-camera footage, witness interviews and forensic evidence before issuing a written finding on whether the shooting was legally justified.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500, per the department's phone directory, or submit an anonymous tip to LA Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
At this early stage, investigators have not disclosed the suspect’s name or the circumstances that led to the gunfire. The department and the DA’s office said they will release more information when it becomes available as the Homicide Bureau completes its probe and the DA finishes its review.
