A Saturday evening drive on a busy stretch of Ballenger Creek Pike in Frederick ended with four people in the hospital after a two-vehicle crash that involved a cyclist. The collision happened in the 4700 block of the road around 5 p.m., according to county emergency crews, who treated multiple people at the scene before sending them to area hospitals.
According to Fox Baltimore, Frederick County Fire & Rescue reported that two people were transported to a local trauma center, one person was taken to a pediatric hospital, and another was taken to a nearby hospital. Officials said all four patients had injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Where It Happened
The wreck unfolded along a heavily traveled segment of Ballenger Creek Pike that runs past Ballenger Creek Park and the Ballenger Creek Linear Trail, a 4.2-mile multi-use path used by cyclists and pedestrians. The trail connects neighborhoods to schools, parks, and local businesses, according to Frederick County Parks & Recreation, and includes several crossings of Ballenger Creek Pike where drivers, riders, and walkers frequently intersect. That blend of commuter traffic and trail users can turn the corridor into a hotspot for close calls.
Safety Context
State data underscore how vulnerable cyclists are when something goes wrong. The Maryland Highway Safety Office’s Zero Deaths Maryland campaign reports that more than 80 percent of bicycle-involved crashes result in an injury. Transportation agencies have been steering grant money and planning efforts toward redesigning risky corridors, upgrading crossings, and extending trail networks in an effort to bring those numbers down.
WBFF first reported the details of Saturday’s crash. County officials had not released additional information at the time of publication. This story will be updated if authorities share more.
