Kindred, the acclaimed restaurant on Davidson's Main Street, is temporarily closed after a small fire set off the building's sprinkler system and soaked parts of the dining room and upstairs. Owners Joe and Katy Kindred said everyone got out safely, but the water damage is significant enough that cleanup and repairs are now the main item on the menu.
In a video shared on Instagram and reported by the Charlotte Observer, the Kindreds said the blaze started Sunday evening around 7:30 p.m. in a wastebasket inside an upstairs bathroom and was quickly contained.
“Thankfully everyone is safe and well, and we owe so much gratitude to our amazing team that managed the situation so well,” the owners said, according to the Charlotte Observer. Staff members grabbed squeegees to push water out of the space, while neighboring businesses and the Davidson community stepped in to help, the Kindreds added. Joe Kindred said the restaurant will remain closed “for a period of time” while crews work to repair the space.
Where Kindred stands now
Though the fire itself was minor, the activation of the restaurant’s sprinklers caused “quite a bit of water damage,” the owners said. That prompted a temporary closure for cleanup and repairs, and it will also give the team a chance to make some improvements. Kindred is listed among the MICHELIN Guide American South’s Recommended restaurants in 2025, a nod that helped boost the Main Street spot’s profile, according to the MICHELIN Guide.
When to expect a reopening
There is no firm reopening date yet. The owners say they will welcome guests back once repairs and any planned upgrades are complete. For updates and future reservations, check Kindred's website or its reservation page on Resy.
