A long-vacant Applebee’s on Milwaukee’s south side might finally trade riblets for kimchi. A Korean restaurant is reportedly lining up to take over the former chain spot at 270 W. Holt Ave. in Bay View, potentially becoming the latest independent player to flip a cookie-cutter box into a neighborhood one-off.
According to Urban Milwaukee, operators are planning to occupy the ex-Applebee’s building, though details about who is behind the project, what will be on the menu, and when doors might open are still under wraps. The outlet’s May 21 story also framed the proposal as part of a broader shuffle of restaurant openings and moves across the city.
What Shuttered, Where It Sits, And Why It Matters
“The sole Milwaukee location for Applebee’s, the American chain restaurant, shuttered in 2020 amid the earliest days of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Urban Milwaukee reported in 2023. That piece pegged the site as 270 W. Holt Ave., a high-visibility address that has drawn interest from multiple would-be restaurateurs since the chain called it quits.
Milwaukee’s Korean Wave Keeps Building
If the plan moves ahead, the new tenant would plug directly into Milwaukee’s growing appetite for Korean and pan-Asian food. OnMilwaukee reported last month that Soban Korean Eatery opened downtown, highlighting how demand for Korean flavors has been steadily ramping up across the city.
Permits, Paperwork, And The Waiting Game
Before anything starts sizzling on Holt Avenue, the operators will need the usual green lights from City Hall, including a food-dealer license and any permits tied to alcohol sales. According to the City of Milwaukee’s license reports, those applications are public records reviewed by municipal licensing staff and the Common Council.
Urban Milwaukee has not yet identified the operator or offered an opening timeline, and no formal schedule has surfaced. Expect more details once permit filings appear or when the prospective owners, or city officials, decide to go public.
