Homeland Security Investigations agents in Los Angeles seized about 105 pounds of methamphetamine and arrested a driver on Monday, authorities said. Photos released by law enforcement show bundles of suspected meth laid out on the pavement beside an older-model sedan that had just been stopped.

According to KTLA, the motorist had crossed the U.S.-Mexico border only hours before agents pulled the vehicle over, and federal officers arrested the driver at the scene. Officials have not said which port of entry was used, and they have kept the exact time and location of the seizure under wraps, KTLA reported.

How This Haul Stacks Up

While 105 pounds is a hefty haul, it tracks with a string of large meth seizures in Southern California this year. In one standout case, Customs officers at Otay Mesa found about 945 pounds of liquid meth hidden in a big-rig fuel tank in March, a reminder of how traffickers move massive quantities of narcotics through commercial traffic, the Los Angeles Times noted.

Smuggling Tactics And Enforcement

A recent Government Accountability Office review (GAO) describes how cartels and traffickers use passenger vehicles and freight to move meth and how joint federal task forces are trying to keep up. The review emphasizes that seizing loads at ports of entry and during interior traffic stops remains a core tactic even as smugglers keep tweaking their concealment methods.

Legal Outlook

Investigators are expected to send the seized material for lab testing before federal prosecutors decide on potential importation or distribution charges. Officials have not yet announced any specific counts in this case. In similar prosecutions, including the Otay Mesa fuel-tank bust, defendants have been hit with federal importation charges that carry long mandatory minimum sentences, the Los Angeles Times reported.
