Surveillance video released Friday shows a man police say is wanted in connection with a daytime shooting in Northeast Washington, D.C. Investigators say the gunfire rang out just before 2:30 p.m. Monday in the 600 block of Edgewood Street NE. The victim was found at the scene, taken to a hospital, and is expected to recover. Detectives are now circulating the footage and asking anyone who recognizes the man in the clip to speak up.
Police Release Surveillance Footage
The video, made public at the end of the week, shows a man walking away from the Edgewood Street scene in a navy shirt, black pants and gray shoes, according to WJLA. The outlet reports that officers found the wounded man on the block shortly after the shooting and got him to a hospital, where he is expected to pull through.
How To Help
Anyone who recognizes the man in the video or has information about the shooting is asked to call the Metropolitan Police Department tip line at 202-727-9099 or text tips anonymously to 50411, authorities say. The department has previously offered cash rewards for tips that lead to an arrest, and neighbors who might have surveillance footage or other evidence are being urged to contact detectives, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
Context For The Release
The video is landing at a sensitive moment for MPD leadership, which is facing public questions over crime-data transparency. Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll told reporters the department will “continue to make sure that our crimes stat procedures are improved,” according to WJLA. Police emphasize that while public tips can jump-start a case, every lead has to be carefully checked to avoid misidentifying anyone caught on camera.
